A series of daily updates for CHO members regarding relevant updates pertaining to Coronavirus from home and abroad.

Key Announcements:

  • Yesterday, a total of 3,383 new cases and 1 death within 28 days of a positive test were reported in the UK.
  • A total of 39,379,411 people have now received the first dose of a vaccine and 25,537,133 have received a second dose.
  • Member of the Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, Professor Adam Finn, has said that the country remains vulnerable, as more than half of UK adults have not had two vaccine doses.
  • Passengers arriving from countries on the UK’s Covid red list are being channelled through a dedicated terminal at Heathrow Airport – T3.
  • The World Health Organisation has announced plans to rename Covid variants with Greek alphabet letters in a bid to lose the ‘stigma’ of geographic titles.
  • Boris Johnson has a “moral duty” to immediately start matching each vaccine administered at home with a donated dose to poorer countries across the world, a cross-party group of MPs and peers has said.
  • Thousands of young people flocked to Twickenham rugby stadium for their vaccinations yesterday as part of the effort to defeat the coronavirus variant.

Regional/Devolved

  • This afternoon, Nicola Sturgeon will confirm whether the next stage of Scotland’s lockdown easing can go ahead next week.

International

  • From Tuesday, a system will be ready to allow EU member states to issue a digital Covid passport to citizens proving their status and freeing them up to travel.
  • Travellers from the UK will have to provide “compelling reasons” to enter France from Monday, as French authorities tighten curbs to halt the spread of the Indian Covid variant.

Stakeholders

  • A whole generation of children may have been left “traumatised” during the pandemic, social workers have warned.
  • Workers on the NHS test-and-trace operation who are being paid £9.50 an hour were charged out to the government’s supplier, Serco, at as much as £21.50 an hour.
  • School closures in England during the Covid lockdown badly damaged the mental health of mothers but had no impact on fathers’ wellbeing, research has found.

  • The school day will be extended by half an hour under a £15bn Covid rescue plan to help Britain’s children to catch up after months of disrupted education.
