A series of daily updates for CHO members regarding relevant updates pertaining to Coronavirus from home and abroad.

Key Announcements:

  • At a summit of the G7 Group, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to urge world leaders to commit to vaccinating the world against coronavirus by the end of 2022, the BBC reports.
  • Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, said the government was open to delaying the next and final stage of the roadmap out of lockdown if necessary. The greater transmissibility of the Delta variant of Covid, first identified in India, made the decision on lifting lockdown “more challenging”, he said.
  • The Health Secretary has confirmed that adults under the age of 30 would be invited to book their first Covid vaccine this week.
  • Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy , has said the government should scrap the government’s amber list for travel.
  • Former chief scientific advisor, Sir David King , told Sky News that current Covid figures were “evidence of another wave appearing”.

Devolved

  • Surge testing for the Delta variant is underway in Kilkeel, County Down in Northern Ireland, following a small number of cases linked to a local high school.
  • Eluned Morgan, Wales’ Health Minister, has warned that a third wave of Covid in Wales is inevitable , following the identification of 97 cases of the Delta variant in the country.
  • Lockdown restrictions have been eased further in Wales , opening the way for large outdoor events with 10,000 seated people to take place and for three households to meet indoors.

International

  • States across India have begun to ease Covid restrictions, as case numbers fall in cities such as Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Australian authorities in Victoria have reported the biggest rise in new Covid cases in a week, following identification of a case of the Delta variant.
  • Thailand’s vaccination drive has begun as the country tries to contain its third wave of coronavirus cases.

Stakeholders

  • NHS staff are urging the government to be cautious about easing lockdown restrictions further on 21 June, and warned that further reopening would be a “recipe for disaster”.
