A series of daily updates for CHO members regarding relevant updates pertaining to Coronavirus from home and abroad.

Key Announcements:

  • On Sunday 27th June, 14,876 new covid cases were reported in the UK (this excludes some cases in England).
  • There were 11 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.
  • 44,314,799 people have now received the first dose of a vaccine and 32,460,191 have received a second dose.
  • New Health and Social Care Secretary, Sajid Javid, will update the House of Commons later today on the lifting of Covid restrictions.
  • Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and six senior military commanders are self-isolating after the head of the armed forces tested positive for Covid-19.
  • Oxford/AstraZeneca have begun trials of a booster Covid-19 jab to target the variant first identified in South Africa, also known as B.1.351 or Beta.
  • A Government advisor on SAGE has said that school bubbles need a rethink ahead of pupils returning in September.
  • Fewer than one in a thousand Covid-19 infections are now resulting in death, according to calculations by statisticians in Cambridge.

Devolved

  • Covid restrictions for weddings have eased in Scotland, with live entertainment allowed and suppliers no longer part of the limit on guests.
  • Scotland’s stadiums could be full on 10 August if the Covid route map remains on track, National clinical director, Professor Jason Leitch, said.

International

  • Germany will attempt today to ban British travellers from the EU regardless of whether or not they have had a vaccine.
  • Britons arriving in Portugal by air, land or sea must show proof they are fully vaccinated or self isolate for 14 days at “home or at a place indicated by health authorities”, the Portuguese government said in a statement.
  • All of Italy became a mask-free, “low-risk” zone for coronavirus as of today.
  • Authorities in South Africa have imposed new restrictions in a last ditch attempt to stem a sharp rise in Covid-19 that is ravaging the country’s economic heartland.
  • Sydney, Australia’s most populous city and the capital of New South Wales (NSW) state, began a two-week lockdown over the weekend.

  • Small firms need more help to bridge an 18-day gap as Covid limits continue but financial support packages wind down, the Federation of Small Business has said.
